European renewable energy projects co-located with battery storage lose revenue streams because clean energy certificates are not recognised under outdated rules for guarantees of origin (GOs), industry leaders told Montel. Current frameworks were unable to distinguish whether batteries were charged from the grid or from renewable sources, they said.

"GOs were issued at generation but did not record that the same clean power went in and out of the battery."

That meant auditors were unable to verify the chain of custody.

“So even if the battery is charged entirely from a renewable source, its discharge is treated as generic grid power because registries can’t prove where that energy came from,” he said.

"For 24/7 carbon free energy, storage is essential. If you can prove a battery charged with verified carbon-free power, that discharge should qualify as clean.”
