The GHG Protocol's proposed Scope 2 update is the standard catching up to how the grid actually works. Today, a data centre that buys 10 GWh of certificates for 10 GWh of consumption can claim 100% renewable, regardless of whether supply matched demand hour by hour.

The update – now in public consultation – moves reporting onto hourly granularity: claims will reflect when and where power was drawn from the grid. For operators already investing in cleaner consumption profiles, that is a clearer way to show the work.

Renewabl's CEO JP Cerda spoke to DatacenterDynamics about this shift. Hourly matching gives operators a sharper picture of where their renewable cover actually lands across the day, and where to act. The piece argues that operators who clean their consumption data, diversify their portfolio mix, and treat scarce-hour RECs as a hedge against price swings will be in the strongest position when the new rules land.
